What You Need to Know About Minnesota Unemployment Insurance Benefits System

We know you are likely fielding questions from constituents about their eligibility for benefits, the UI application, and the unemployment insurance benefits system in general. Here is some basic information that may be helpful as you advise your constituents.


Unemployment insurance benefits provide temporary financial assistance to workers unemployed through no fault of their own that meet Minnesota's eligibility requirements. Recipients must have earned sufficient base period wages. The date of application will not affect the amount of benefits you will be paid.


You can file for unemployment insurance benefits if you lose your job or if your hours are reduced.


If you lose your job or your hours are reduced, you may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. To qualify for benefits, you must meet certain requirements, such as being able to work and being available for work. 


You will also need to have earned a certain amount of money during a set period of time. When you file your claim, you will be asked to provide information about your employment history and earnings.

As of April 2022, employers in New York City will be required to list the minimum and maximum salary on all job postings, promotions or transfer offers. If an applicant's salary history does not meet the criteria set by the employer, the applicant may not be considered for the position.


While an employer may request salary history from an applicant after an offer of employment is extended, state agencies and departments may not request salary history from applicants until after an offer of employment is extended. If an applicant's salary history is not provided, the employer may not use that information to determine whether or not to extend a job offer.


Remember that whatever your age, you must have earned the required number of work credits within a certain period ending with the time your disability began in order to qualify
